The Road To Hell

I believe it was Stephen King who said "the road to hell is paved with adverbs." As I like to say, can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em...but in your manuscript, you probably should. That said, first drafts will be riddled with these nasty things. Don't worry. It's normal. That's what second drafts are for!

This one time, I was working with my online critique group, and I thought to myself "I'm smart. I know adverbs are the death of writing. I'm a good enough writer that I have very few, if any in these 10 pages."

FALSE.

In 10 pages, I'd managed to barf up TWENTY-NINE adverbs. My jaw hit the floor, in a manner of speaking. See how I avoided saying "figuratively?" I'm learning :}

Step 1: A trick to finding all this little monsters is to click the search/find button in your manuscript whether it's in Word or Scrivener. Then search for "ly" and watch all your nightmares come true. It's awful, but telling.

Step 2: Fix it.

And there you go! How to avoid eternal damnation.
